Paid takeovers are not available yet. Voice Takeover is in development and only the waitlist is open. This page says which messages will not be spoken once they open.
A takeover puts a viewer’s words in a streamer’s voice, in front of the streamer’s audience and the other players in the game. That is a lot of trust, so the rules are plain. They apply to every message, whatever the amount paid. They are part of the terms.
Messages that are not allowed
- Hate. Slurs, or attacks on people for their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, caste, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or similar traits.
- Harassment and bullying. Insults, mockery or pile-ons aimed at a real person, including the streamer, other players, and other streamers or viewers.
- Sexual content. Sexual or explicit messages of any kind. Anything sexual that involves a minor is never allowed and will be reported where the law requires it.
- Threats and violence against real people. Threats, calls to hurt someone, or praise of real attacks. This includes encouraging self-harm or suicide.
- Personal data (doxxing). Real names, home or work addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, account names, or any private detail of a real person who has not agreed to it.
- Links, ads and promotion. Web addresses, handles, discount codes, other streamers’ channels, servers to join, anything that sells or advertises.
- Impersonation. Pretending to be a real person, a staff member of a game server or a company, or the streamer’s family, friends or sponsors, in a way that could mislead someone.
- Real-world illegal activity. Asking for or offering anything illegal, scams, or false emergencies.
- Spam and tricks. Repeated copies of the same message, strings of noise, or attempts to get around these rules by misspelling or splitting words.
- Breaking the game’s own rules on purpose. For example, messages meant to get the streamer banned from a server, or to break its rules.
Adult content is not allowed on Voice Takeover, in any form.
In-character fiction is allowed, within limits
The first game for Voice Takeover is GTA V roleplay, where crime, chases, guns and drugs are part of the story. A line spoken as the character, in the world of the game, such as “Officer, that’s not my car”, is fine. A line is in character when it is about the game’s world and its made-up people.
The limits above still apply. Fiction is not an excuse for hate, for sexual content, for a threat that names a real person, or for personal data. A line that only pretends to be a game line, but is meant to hurt a real person, is a violation.
How messages are checked
When paid takeovers open, a message will be checked before the viewer pays, by automatic rules (for example, for links, phone numbers and email addresses) and by an automated check for the categories above. The checks are tuned so that game fiction is not blocked just for being violent. A message that fails is turned away with a reason, and the viewer can change it. Nothing is charged for it.
Automatic checks make mistakes. So the streamer keeps their own controls: blocked words, a mode where each message waits for the streamer’s OK before it plays, a hold and a skip button, and a panic key that stops the voice at once. The streamer decides what plays on their channel, and may turn away a message that is allowed here.
Reports and removals
If a message that broke these rules was played, or you see a streamer’s page being used to break them, write to hello@voicetakeover.com with the streamer’s name, the date and time (with your time zone) and what was said. We read every report. A spoken message cannot be un-played, but we can act on it:
- refund the payment if it was charged (see refunds and cancellations);
- take the message down so it cannot play again;
- stop the sender from using Voice Takeover again; and
- for a streamer who keeps allowing such messages, limit or suspend their page.
We may also share what the law requires with the authorities, for example about a threat or about a child being at risk.
Changes
We may change these rules as we learn what people try. If a change matters, we will change the date at the top.
